Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) designates May as National Asthma Awareness Month. Allergies and asthma affect millions of Americans, yet they are among the most commonly overlooked medical conditions and have been steadily increasing in prevalence since the early 1980s.

If you suffer from allergies, you know the symptoms: coughing, sneezing, itchy eyes, runny nose and scratchy throat. What you may not know is that according to the AAFA, allergies comprise the fifth leading chronic disease in the U.S. among all ages.

During an asthma attack, airways become narrowed and breathing can become extremely difficult. These symptoms cause 40,000 Americans to miss school or work everyday. According to the AAFA, however, with proper treatment, a person can live a normal, active life.

The AAFA’s theme this year is “for life without limits.” The AAFA asks you to understand the importance of recognizing the causes of asthma and allergies to best prevent and treat attacks. Visit www.AAFA.org for more information.
