Arts and Culture

Garden State Arts Foundation
As the fundraising arm of the Garden State Cultural Center Fund, the Garden State Arts Foundation seeks to preserve high-quality classical and cultural performances held at the PNC Bank Arts Center. The Foundation also provides the financial support necessary for the Fund to conduct free programs for school children, senior citizens, and other special needs residents of New Jersey.

Improving the quality of life for New Jersey's citizens is among Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey's top priorities; especially concerning seniors and other special needs residents. As the Presenting Sponsor of the Foundation's annual Senior Concert Series, Horizon BCBSNJ is delighted to take part in offering the state's seniors and other special needs residents with fun and entertaining live performances, free of charge.

New Jersey Performing Arts Center
The New Jersey Performing Arts Center, more commonly referred to as NJPAC, is credited as the spark that ignited the revitalization of the city of Newark. NJPAC showcases some of the world's top musical and theatrical performers and is dedicated to enriching the lives of New Jersey residents through the arts. NJPAC also provides children, ages 3-18, with a comprehensive Arts Education Program, the fourth largest in the nation.

As the Official Health Care Sponsor, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey is honored to support NJPAC and its dedication to bringing innovative arts performances and programming to the residents of New Jersey. Through its continued support of NJPAC, Horizon BCBSNJ is also proud to play a part in the revitalization of the Newark area, especially in hopes of improving the quality of life for local and regional residents.

Health Initiatives and Organizations

Childhood Immunizations at UMDNJ
The Childhood Immunizations Program, offered in conjunction with the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), works to provide free immunizations for children in Newark whose families are unable to obtain timely, age-appropriate immunizations. Along with Project Vaccinate of the Newark Department of Health and Human Services, the Childhood Immunizations Program of UMDNJ also works to enter children's immunization records into the New Jersey Immunization Information System, a Web-based, statewide registry.

Through the World Class Clinical Quality (WCCQ) health care initiative, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey gladly provides funding to the Childhood Immunizations Program of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Horizon BCBSNJ recognizes the value that vaccines and immunizations have as the most effective tool in helping children live longer and healthier lives.

Kidney Early Evaluation Program
Developed by the National Kidney Foundation in 1997, the Kidney Early Evaluation Program (KEEP) aims to raise awareness and promote free screenings for those with an increased risk for kidney disease, including those with a family history of kidney disease, diabetes and hypertension. The program has helped improve the health of more than 30,000 people at risk for chronic kidney disease.

Through its World Class Clinical Quality (WCCQ) health care initiative, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey strives to improve the health and well being of New Jersey residents and offers programs that provide health education, coordinated care, and one-on-one support for members with certain chronic conditions, such as kidney disease. Horizon BCBSNJ proudly supports KEEP and its mission to provide ongoing information and support to people at high risk for kidney disease.

Shape It Up Program
The Shape It Up Program is a new health initiative to provide obesity intervention workshops in the public elementary schools of New Jersey. With lessons designed by certified teachers and tailored to meet the requirements of the New Jersey Core Health Curriculum, Shape It Up seeks to increase awareness of healthy eating habits and exercise patterns in our communities.

Working in conjunction with the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy at Rutgers University, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey's World Class Clinical Quality (WCCQ) health care initiative has developed the Shape It Up Program to provide age-appropriate, educational lessons that focus on exercise, healthy eating, and obesity.

Special Olympics New Jersey
Since 1968, Special Olympics New Jersey (SONJ) has provided free athletic training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports to adults and children with developmental disabilities. Year-round training includes aquatics, track and field, skiing, cycling, gymnastics, and more. SONJ seeks to provide people with mental retardation year-round opportunities to develop physical fitness, courage, self-confidence, and strong social bonds.

As a Gold Partner, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey helps Special Olympics New Jersey improve the health, well-being, and quality of life for some of New Jersey's most exceptional people and athletes. To ensure that SONJ can provide the year-round training these athletes deserve, Horizon BCBSNJ is also the Presenting Sponsor of the annual SONJ Fall Golf Classic, which has raised significant funds to benefit over 13,500 adults and children with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities.

Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Central & South Jersey Affiliate
The Komen Central and South Jersey Affiliate is one of more than 115 Affiliates of the Komen Foundation sharing the mission of eradicating breast cancer as a life-threatening disease. All activities are designed to raise awareness in the community about breast health and breast cancer as well as raise funds.

As a dedicated partner in the fight against breast cancer, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey is a proud sponsor of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Central & South Jersey Affiliate. Furthermore, Horizon BCBSNJ is also a co-presenting sponsor of the RACE FOR THE CURE^®'' Golf Classic. Proceeds help fund the Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Award and Research Grant Program, as well as breast cancer treatment, awareness, and education projects throughout New Jersey.

Women's Heart Foundation
Since its inception in 1991, the Women's Heart Foundation has been dedicated to improving the survival and quality of life for women diagnosed with heart disease through education and awareness programs. One of the primary goals of the Women's Heart Foundation is not only to raise women's awareness of the disease, but also to educate health professionals about the many different ways in which heart disease affects women's lives.

Committed to finding a cure for heart disease, the number-one killer of women ages 35 and older, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey is proud to be a supporter of the Women's Heart Foundation. As a State Sponsor, Horizon BCBSNJ works with the Women's Heart Foundation year-round to ensure that women are properly educated about the dangers of heart disease and how to effectively prevent it.

Lakewood Blue Claws
Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey is proud to support the Lakewood Blue Claws, the minor league team affiliated with the Philadelphia Phillies of Major League Baseball and a member of the Class A South Atlantic League.

The Blue Claws have been providing New Jersey residents with great baseball action since 2001. During their first four seasons, they averaged over 6,500 attendees per game and have demonstrated a strong commitment to their fans and community through family-fun activities and game-day promotions.

Camden Riversharks
Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey is expanding its presence in Camden by becoming a proud sponsor of the Riversharks. A member of the independent Atlantic League, Camdens very own Riversharks is one of the most exciting professional baseball teams in Minor League Baseball today.

Together with the Riversharks, Horizon BCBSNJ hopes to enrich the quality of life in the Camden area by playing a significant role in its revitalization, both socially and culturally.

With Campbells Field serving as Camdens only professional sports facility, the Riversharks are affecting a positive impact on both fans and community alike. One of the Riversharks' community outreach programs, Reading with the Riversharks is a huge success with their local fans the kids. Community service is an important part of both the Horizon BCBSNJ and the Riversharks philosophy, so it is only fitting that they team up for a better Camden.

Princeton University
As one of the United States' finest and most renowned institutions of higher education, Princeton University celebrates a rich history of providing students with outstanding service and academic excellence. The athletics division of Princeton University emphasizes the positive impact that competitive sports can have on students' educational experience and community development.

Somerset Patriots
One of the more captivating teams of Minor League Baseball, the Somerset Patriots Professional Baseball Club has attracted an extensive fan base since its inception in 1998. Recognizing the importance of teamwork, the Patriots work to provide the best of sports entertainment to demonstrate their appreciation of the local community and fans' continual support.

Trenton Thunder
An affiliate of the New York Yankees and member of the AA Eastern League, the Trenton Thunder has been providing New Jersey residents with exciting Minor League Baseball action for 10 years. In keeping with a Yankees tradition, the Trenton Thunder has committed itself to being an integral part of the community that supports it.

New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority
The New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority (NJSEA) owns and operates many of New Jersey's top sports and entertainment venues, including Giants Stadium, the Meadowlands Racetrack, Continental Airlines Arena, the Monmouth Park Racetrack, the Atlantic City Convention Center, the Wildwoods Convention Center, and Historic Boardwalk Hall. Adventure Aquarium
The newly renovated Adventure Aquarium, previously known as the New Jersey State Aquarium, is opening its doors to a new 200,000-square-foot facility that redefines the meaning of exploring the vast world of marine life. More than $40 million was invested in the renovation that now displays over 6,000 types of marine specimens in their natural environments and provides new enhancements in education and entertainment for the public.

To further the educational efforts of Adventure Aquarium, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey is a proud sponsor of the Touch-a-Shark program. Touch-a-Shark is an interactive exhibit where visitors can reach into designated tanks and pet small sharks and stingrays while trained educators answer questions.

PNC Bank Arts Center
One of the top five most successful amphitheaters in the United States for over 10 years, the PNC Bank Arts Center is one of New Jersey's most important venues for the arts. Each concert season, the Arts Center is host to some of the world's top musical performances and heritage festivals, as well as the cultural center for the programming of the Garden State Arts Foundation.
