Making Student Verification Easier for Horizon BCBSNJ Members During the Student Verification process, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey verifies the full-time student status of any dependent who falls between the maximum dependent and maximum student ages. Verifying the full-time student status of dependents ensures that their coverage will continue. Horizon BCBSNJ has recently made changes to our workflows to make this process easier for our members. In the past, Horizon BCBSNJ required annual Student Verification from our members. Members were asked to submit documentation to complete the verification process. Beginning in the fall of 2009, the Student Verification process will become a semi-annual process where members can confirm student status for their dependents through a dial-in Interactive Voice Response (IVR) phone number, 1-888-345-5070. Subscribers will verify full-time student status for their dependents by identifying the impacted dependent and noting if they are currently attending an accredited school or institution of higher learning on a full-time basis. This “over-the-phone” verbal verification will act as the member’s attestation of their dependents’ full-time student status. Dependents who are not verified by the deadline detailed below will have their coverage terminated. Terminated dependents will receive a Certificate of Creditable Coverage (COCC) letter indicating that their coverage has been terminated. The timeline for the semi-annual Student Verification process will be as follows: Fall 2009 Student Verification Timeline | Letters sent with IVR dial-in information | Late August | IVR opened for Student Verification | September 15, 2009 through October 15, 2009 | Terminations processed for nonresponsive dependents | Late October | Termination date used for nonresponsive Dependents | November 1, 2009 | Winter 2009/Spring 2010 Student Verification Timeline | Letters sent with IVR dial-in information | Late December | IVR opened for Student Verification | January 15, 2010 through February 15, 2010 | Terminations processed for nonresponsive dependents | Late February | Termination date used for nonresponsive dependents | March 1, 2010 |
