Asthma Health Education Program

Asthma accounts for one quarter of all Emergency Room visits in the United States.*

Did you know that only 50 percent of people who have asthma adhere to their use of inhaled steroids?  Patients who missed one out of four doses doubled their risk of being hospitalized and 60 percent of hospitalizations could have been prevented had patients taken their inhaled medication as directed.*

Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey empowers you by helping you understand how to better manage your asthma through the Asthma Health Education Program.  This program is available for eligible members age five and older, who are diagnosed with asthma.  This no-cost program invites members to take advantage of its valuable resources, including:

  • Toll-free support line staffed by registered nurses specializing in asthma care.
  • Quarterly educational mailings about asthma.
  • Personal dietician to review your individual nutritional needs.
  • Information about innovations in treatment and nationally recognized guidelines to help you manage your chronic condition.
  • Emphasis on the importance of an asthma action plan and preventive immunizations.
  • Valuable resource information - including community programs, support groups and web-based educational resources.

The goal of this program is to help you reach your optimal health care goals and adhere to the treatment plan established by your physician.

It takes more than medication to manage your asthma.  Call a professional Care Specialist today to learn more about the impact of asthma and how you can better manage your condition.
