Getting Started: Recipients

The United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) maintains a centralized computer network, UNetSM, that links all organ procurement organizations (OPOs) and transplant centers.  Local OPOs around the country coordinate organ donation.  They evaluate potential donors, discuss donation with surviving family members and arrange for the surgical removal and transport of donated organs.   The national waiting list is maintained on UNet and is only open to transplant professionals who are members of the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network.  The public cannot access it.

Candidates for organ transplant need to follow these steps to get on the national waiting list:

  1. Obtain a referral from a physician.
  2. Contact a transplant hospital.
  3. Schedule an appointment at the transplant hospital to determine if you are an appropriate candidate.

Ask questions during evaluation to learn as much as possible about the hospital and its transplant team.

Once the evaluation is completed, the hospital’s transplant team will determine when it is appropriate for you to be added to the national waiting list.
