cross-country or around the world, The BlueCard®' Program gives you the freedom to choose doctors and hospitals from over 200 countries for your care.
Traveling within the United States
- Always carry your Horizon POS ID card when traveling within the United States.
- If you need care,* call BlueCard Access, at 1-800-810-BLUE (2583) to find a nearby Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) doctor or hospital, or visit the BlueCard Doctor and Hospital Finder at www.bcbs.com.
- Call Horizon BCBSNJ to obtain prior authorization** from us, if necessary. The number is 1-800-355-BLUE (2583).
- Visit a BCBS participating doctor or hospital and present your Horizon POS ID card. The doctor or hospital will verify your membership in the Horizon POS plan.
- After you receive medical care, your claim is routed to us. All providers are paid directly and you are only responsible for your office visit copayment at the time of service.
Traveling outside the United States
If you are outside of the US and need care, please call the BlueCard Worldwide Service Center at 1-800-810-BLUE (2583) or call collect at 1-804-673-1177.
* In an emergency, go directly to the nearest hospital.
** This number is located on your Horizon POS ID card and is different from the BlueCard Access number mentioned above.
Using a nonparticipating provider
If you do not use a participating Blue Cross Blue Shield plan provider:
- You may be responsible for the difference between what we allow for the services rendered and what the doctor charges.
- You may be asked to pay the entire bill up front (including your copayment) at the time of service.
- You will have to submit all the paperwork yourself.
- Send the bill with your ID number and the date you received the services to:

Follow-up care
All routine follow-up care should be performed by your PCP for you to receive benefits at the in-network level.
Out-of-Area Behavioral Health and Substance Abuse Care
You are covered for out-of-area managed behavioral health and substance abuse care (including alcoholism). To arrange this care, please call Magellan Health Services at 1-800-626-2212.
