The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey Announces 23 Grants Totaling $516,625

Grants Support Charitable Organizations Across New Jersey

(Newark, NJ, May 19, 2009) - William J. Marino, Chairman of the Board of Directors of The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey, (Foundation) announced the Foundation’s first round of grants for 2009 totaling $516,625.  The Foundation supports charitable organizations that promote health and the arts throughout New Jersey.

“We congratulate the 23 organizations receiving grants, and are proud of the way each in its own distinct manner contributes to the special quality of life in our state,” said William J. Marino.

The Foundation awarded the following 23 grants:

  • AIDS Resource Foundation for Children in Newark, received a grant of $20,000 to support its Academy Street Firehouse After-School Program.  The  program provides couselling and support for both children with HIV/AIDS and for family members who may have HIV/AIDS.  The program fosters self-esteem and promotes healthy behaviors.

  • Algonquin Arts in Manasquan, received a grant of $7,500 to support Page and Stage, a literacy and cultural enrichment project for Head Start programs in Abbott school districts.  The grant supports expansion of the Neptune Township Head Start Program to include 210 children who will participate in  pre-performance workshops and attend live performances of classic childrens’ books at the Alogonquin Theatre.

  • American Red Cross of Northern New Jersey received a grant of $10,000 to support Disaster Relief for the victims of flooding in North Dakota’s Red River Valley region.

  • Arts Council of the Morris Area in Morristown, received a grant of $5,000 to support the expansion of its Arts Education Program.  The grant will be used to add artists to staff and develop arts education programs for schools.  The expanded program will introduce innovative teaching strategies to over 150 teachers and serve 10,700 students at 84 New Jersey schools.

  • Bancroft NeuroHealth in Haddonfield, received a $60,000 challenge grant to support the purchase of an Electronic Medical Record System. The award is comprised of a $30,000 grant not subject to any challenge grant conditions, plus a challenge grant for up to an additional $30,000 if the organzation raises contributions from other funding sources.

  • Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood, received a grant of $20,000 to support the expansion of its Arts Education Program that allows students to learn about theater work and participate in dance classes. The grant will also support the Arts Residency Program, the Subsidized and Free Ticket Program and beyond dance @ bergen PAC. More than 50,000 people will be served by the grant.

  • Christ the King Preparatory School in Newark, received a grant of $36,000 to support its HIV/AIDS and STD Health Education, Counseling and Prevention Program.  The program will provide funding for a clinical social worker to facilitate weekly health education classes and clinical counseling services for 350 students and their families.

  • Dante Hall Theater of the Arts in Atlantic City, received a general operating grant of $5,000 to support its building operations and marketing initiatives for the 2009 season.

  • Diabetes Foundation in Paramus, received a grant of $10,000 to support its Physicians’ Seminars Program.  The program offers internists and family practitioners two statewide seminars on best practices in diabetic patient care.  The seminars will help educate internists and family practitioners on how to treat diabetes and provide follow-up and preventative care services for diabetic patients.

  • Family Resource Network in Trenton, received a grant of $15,000 to support its Caregiver Program.  The program offers three educational workshops and a formal support group for families with autistic children.

  • Main Street Counseling Center in West Orange, received a grant of $25,000 to support its Defeating Childhood Depression Program.  The grant will fund a therapist for this school-based counseling program to screen and treat childhood depression through prevention education and therapeutic intervention.

  • McCarter Theatre in Princeton, received a grant of $7,500 to support its Arts Education Program.  The program encourages New Jersey students in grades K-12  to experience theater through participation in student matinees, touring productions, after-school acting classes, and in-school residences. The grant also supports a professional development program for teachers.

  • Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts in Cape May, received a grant of $5,000 to support the 20th Cape May Music Festival taking place from May 17 through June 11.

  • Morris Museum in Morristown, received a grant of $5,625 to support its Model Transportation Program.  The program provides transportation and lunch for elementary school children and their teachers who visit the museum from the Newark and Dover school districts with transportation and lunch for exhibition tours.

  • New Jersey Symphony Orchestra in Newark, received a grant of $150,000 to support its artistic, education and community outreach programs.  This season the symphony will perform more than 60 concerts for over 225,000 people at venues throughout New Jersey.

  • North Ward Center in Newark, received a grant of $50,000 to support its Autism Awareness and Transitional Education Initiative.  The funds will support educational seminars on the transition from school to adulthood for children within the authism spectrum.

  • Opera New Jersey in Princeton, received a grant of $7,500 to support its 2009 Fall Tour of Mozart’s The Magic Flute.  The opera will be presented to over 5,000 students at 10 schools in Newark and Trenton.  At the performances students perform onstage alongside the regular cast of professionals and gain confidence and theatrical experience.

  • Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, received a grant of $10,000 to support its Adopt-A-School Project, an arts and cultural education program for New Jersey high school students.  Students and their teachers at Phillipsburg High School will attend Paper Mill theatre productions, participate in intensive theater arts workshops and receive customized classroom study.

  • The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey in Madison, received a grant of $7,500 to support its production of Shakespeare LIVE! Performances are presented to over 35,000 children in schools across the state.

  • Special Olympics New Jersey in Lawrenceville received a grant of $25,000 to support its Young Athlete Program.  The program introduces sports to children with intellectual disabilities and helps them develop motor skills and an appreciation of fitness.  More than 850 children, ages 2 through 7 will participate in the program this year. 

  • Tri-State Actors Theater in Sussex, received a general operating grant of $5,000 to support theater productions, theater classes, and a New Plays Reading Series.  The grant will also support summer intern training, a production program and artist-in-residence programs.

  • The Valerie Fund in Maplewood, received a grant of $20,000 to support its Child Life Program.  The program provides education and counseling for children diagnosed with cancer.  The program also provides support for parents, siblings as well as extended family members.

  • Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center in Millville, received a grant of $10,000 to support the Glasstown Collective Education Program.  The programs receiving support are the GrowCreative! Preschool Program, The Glasstown Partnership, and the Juvenile Justice Studio Parternship.
