Horizon NJ Health Celebrates National Health Center Week

(West Trenton, NJ, August 11, 2009) - In recognition of the services provided by community health centers in New Jersey and nationwide, Horizon NJ Health will be participating in 25 statewide health fairs and events during National Health Center Week from August 9-15, 2009.

“These community-based centers, also known as Federally Qualified Health Centers or FQHCs, provide primary and preventive care for more than 366,000 people in New Jersey and over 18 million people nationwide,” said Karen L. Clark, President and Chief Operating Officer for Horizon NJ Health. “We are proud to be a community partner with these centers as they act as a safety net for so many uninsured and underserved individuals.”

Joining in the weeklong celebration, Horizon NJ Health’s professional staff will be sending the Care-A-Vans, mobile health and wellness units, to many health centers across New Jersey, offering:
• Medical and dental screenings, including blood pressure, glucose and skin analysis and BMI (Body Mass Index)
• NJ, the Horizon NJ Health Mascot
• Information on health related, educational programs
• “Dancing for Your Health” program, designed for all age groups as a healthy and fun way to add activity for a healthier lifestyle
• NJ FamilyCare and NJ FamilyCare ADVANTAGE enrollment information

Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, through its charitable foundation, The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey, has played a leading role in supporting health centers across the state through its five-year, $5 million Health Center Initiative. Since 2006, 20 health centers have received funding through the Initiative.

Health centers have used the funds to expand hours of operation, hire staff, purchase needed medical equipment and medications and make capital improvements.
